Tips for Computer Workers to Avoid Posture-Related Issues

From sitting at our desks during an umpteenth Zoom call, drafting emails to clients or scrolling on our smartphones, back pain is a common side effect of working in today’s digital age.

Unsurprisingly, many of us spend hours hunched over computers, tablets, and cell phones. Unfortunately, this can lead to various posture-related issues, including neck pain, back pain, and even headaches.

“People who do computer work all day often develop what’s called forward head posture, where the head is positioned too far forward of the shoulders. This can lead to significant discomfort,” said Dr. Steve.

Recognizing Forward Head Posture

Forward head posture occurs when the head juts out in front of the shoulders rather than aligning directly over them. “For every inch your head is forward of where it should be, it feels like it weighs 10 more pounds,” Dr. Steve explained. This extra strain can lead to a cascade of problems, not just in the neck but all the way down to the tailbone.

Simple Adjustments to Make

There are several steps you can take to improve your posture while working at a computer. Start by ensuring your monitor is at eye level, so you’re not constantly looking down. “I’d rather see someone on a computer where they’ve raised the level of what they’re looking at,” suggested Dr. Steve.

Additionally, it is a good idea to take regular breaks to stand, stretch, and do exercises that strengthen the back and shoulder muscles, which can help counteract the effects of prolonged sitting.

Exercises to Strengthen Your Posture

To maintain good posture, it’s essential to keep the muscles that support your neck and back toned. Focus on exercises that target the trapezius and rhomboid muscles, as these are key to keeping your head properly aligned over your shoulders. “It’s not about building up these muscles, but rather keeping them toned,” said Dr. Steve. This will help prevent the head from drifting forward and reduce the strain on your neck and back.
